Spring, Summer & Fall Camping Trips.

Winter Camping Too!

The Winter Camping season is a challenging one.  It is difficult to find teens willing to partake.  However, this is no real concern for me since I have three sons who enjoy our Winter Adventures.

The Summer Adventure

Though most avid camper type folks would not consider camping to be an "extreme sport adventure," but here at Non-Toxic we disagree.  Ever camp in weather below freezing, with snow pelting your tent and weighing heavily upon the thin nylon fabric?  Ever get out of a warm and snuggy sleeping bag in December to go potty and decide you can hold it until July?

How about camping on top of a 70 feet high bluff and spending the day rappelling over its enormous limestone face?  Ever do it?  We Do!  Perhaps one can see why we call our Camping Retreats "Extreme."

Camping is a very enjoyable time where Non-Toxic volunteers as well as the teens can sit back and enjoy a lazy day in a relaxed environment.  Wrong!  The usual camping trip consists of rock climbing, rappelling, hiking, swimming, mountain biking, fishing or a number of other activities which last from morning 'til dark.  We relax after we return home from the trip.

Though the day's events are loaded to the max with action and fun we still find time to enjoy a wonderfully cooked meal by, well, ME.  If one likes soda, treats, chips, burgers, brats, hotdogs or chicken then he or she is in the right campsite.  We always attempt to spoil our teens.  They are worth it!

We practice environmentally sensitive and safe camping but occasionally a bass wanders onto the fishing line and becomes lunch.  Mosquitoes are not always spared nor are ticks and flies.  By the way, the insect element here is by itself a testimony of an extreme adventure.

WINTER ADVENTURE

It did not take long for the cold  northern air to sweep over the limestone bluffs and chill the already cooling air.  With nightfall came intense howling from coyotes on distant ridges as the music of the wind joined in for a symphony of mournful cries.  If the author was a dancing man, and he is not, a dirge of slow and chilled movements would have been appropriate.

Camp, including tent and sleeping arrangements was set up early so that the group of four could investigate the wide open mysterious environment.  With leafless trees revealing the long awaited uncovered land there was much to experience anew.  Snow had been forecast and our expectations and hopes were that the rumor was true.  Hiking along frozen trails proved to be exciting and barren rock cliffs leaped out at our party as they never have during the warm summer months.  The curtain had been lifted and we were eager to see what lay behind its magnificent shield.

The sun began its slow decent from the sky so the group hurried back to the base camp where a warm fire roared and the smell of grilled beef over a campfire filled the air.  Supper was consumed quickly as we prepared for story telling around the glowing fire.  The song of coyote, cattle, geese and dogs sounded in the night like a bad orchestra out of time and out of tune.  Even still, it was beautiful to the four who sat alone in the Wisconsin State Park, save for one other distant camper.

Bed time was an enjoyable relief from the hot to cold effect of sitting in front of a fire where one's face was heated but back was cold.   Sleeping bags rustled with the sound of warm bodies reacting to cooler liners until all was warm.  Words were exchanged until the adventurous day's activities took their toll and the small group of winter campers fell asleep.

Around 10pm. a strange sound began to echo in the tent.  Soon I understood what was happening and rolled over and enjoyed the splattering sleet as it hit the tent walls and forest surroundings.  The morning would reveal a beautiful white blanket of a snow stained forest.  Every twig of every tree was coated with thick white sculptures of varying designs.  Hot cocoa and coffee supplied the necessary refreshments to start the day and soon we were hiking along snow laden trails.

The lake, stream, beaver pond and waterfall were destinations investigated and each wild encounter handed the group exactly what it was seeking.  To the majority of people Winter is merely an inconvenient season of the year that mankind must put up with, but to some, Winter camping  holds secrets that few people take advantage of and a time of year that even fewer experience its blessings and secrets.  Winter is a season of incredible value and worth revealing mysteries hidden from the days of our fathers and their  fathers.
